New York City Ballet Mini Review: Saratoga Springs, NY 2021
Last week my 11 year old daughter and I had the pleasure of attending the return of NYC Ballet's summer residence in Saratoga Springs, New York in an all Balanchine program at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
It was such a sweet day for us and included a girls lunch, the ballet, and of course gathering some of the famous medicinal sulfur water for perfect skin and gastrointestinal health.
standouts of the program included:
sara adams and gonzalo garcia dancing rubies. there is such tremendous joy and freedom in his dancing and she is just gorgeous incarnate
miriam miller in "agon" and making her debut in "diamonds". wow, wow, wow!
the info-performance led by gonzalo garcia included tidbits on costumes and balanchine technique which was super engaging and educational for all from ballet newbies to lifelong fans
and then, amar ramasar. i honestly never thought i would see him on stage again. but there he was dancing with a group of 4 male corp members. it’s really hard for a seasoned principal to dance with less groomed corp members. it's hard for amar to not stand out. his carriage is outstanding and your eye just naturally gravitates to him. during the bows you could tell he was used to more accolades; stepping forward to gain the applause but then realizing he was the only male doing so, he stepped back and took his place with the other corps males. is this part of his punishment? will he return to principal status? do we want him to? it was all so emotionally confusing given what happened during "the scandal".
interestingly, it was a chance to discuss again with my daughter cell phone and social media propriety - what should always be private and never shared vs what type of information is shareable.
we were so happy to see NYC Ballet back onstage in beautiful upstate New York!
